Barham House
New house
230 square metres (including breezeway, verandah and garage)
2016
The brief for this house from an avocado farmer in southern NSW was for a modern farmhouse to sit in an open paddock adjacent to the avocado plantation, that coped variously with dirty boots, dogs and visiting family, and provided a highly energy-efficient and flexible house in a climate of extremes (i.e. hot, dry summers, and wet, muddy winters). The design is inspired by the traditional farmhouse, with verandahs and breezeways between and around ‘wings’ providing multiple outdoor living spaces, vehicle parking, and occasionally-used guest spaces. Materials were selected for their low maintenance qualities, and to visually reference nearby farm sheds and rainwater storage tanks.
